Deron Williams Dominates Game 1 of Nets vs Bulls

With 22 points and 7 assists, Deron Williams led the Brooklyn Nets in smashing the Chicago Bulls with a 106-89 figure in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals last April 20 at Barclays Center.

Deron Williams has erased all doubts that his ankle injuries from a month ago would hinder him from showing off an impressive performance with this year’s Playoffs. With a suave two-handed reverse jam that made the crowd roar with delight, anyone would no doubt accept a handful of “I told you so’s”.

When asked about the dunk after the game, Williams said, “It just happened. I was just trying to show the guys at the NBA that I might be able to compete in the dunk contest next year.” Then he added about his injury, “My leg feels good, my ankles feel good right now. I’m excited to be back in the playoffs.”

No pressure, Williams, but it’s not just the dunk you’ll be competing in for sure with that kind of performance. After missing two seasons of playoffs and bypassing painkillers, he will definitely up his games more this season. So basketball junkies, watch out for this point guard.

It was an unfortunate day for the defenses of the Bulls to play without much assistance from Joakim Noah due to sore foot and be up against the power offense of Deron Williams, Brook Lopez, Joe Johnson and Gerald Wallace. If Derek Rose were only there, the Bulls could have caught up.

As Williams delivered 15 points and 4 assists in the first half, Lopez contributed 12 points in the 1st quarter until the Nets garnered a 60-35 lead into the break. It was considered an early win for the Nets.

From start to finish, all you could hear was the crowd chanting “Brooklynnnnn.” Now, who wouldn’t be inspired with such fighting spirit? Hopefully, the Bulls could reclaim their barely holding motivation once the second game rolls in.

History of the NBA

Dating back to 1946, the National Basketball Association is the newest of the four major North American professional sports leagues. In that time, it has emerged from a fledgling organization with unknown players to a league with many of the most famous athletes in world history.

The NBA originally began as the Basketball Association of America. The owners of the major ice hockey arenas in the Northeastern and Midwestern United States and Canada founded it in 1946. On November 1, 1946, the Toronto Huskies hosted the New York Knickerbockers in what the NBA now regards as the league’s first game.

In August of 1949, the BAA agreed to merge with the National Basketball League. The new league was renamed as the National Basketball Association. The NBA had seventeen franchises at its beginning. The number of teams was trimmed down in subsequent years due to financial concerns, and by the 1953-54 season, there were only eight franchises. All eight franchises – the Knicks, Celtics, Warriors, Lakers, Royals/Kings, Pistons, Hawks, and Nationals/76ers – are still in existence today.

There were several teams in the early days that played in smaller cities. These cities included Rochester, Fort Wayne, Syracuse, and “Tri-Cities” (the area now known as the Quad Cities). All of teams playing in these smaller cities eventually relocated to bigger cities. Of the originally eight franchises, only the Boston Celtics and the New York Knicks have stayed put.

The early years of the NBA were dominated by the Minneapolis Lakers. The Lakers were led by center George Mikan. He led the Lakers to five championships. Mikan was the league’s first dominant player, and the League adopted multiple rule changes strictly because of him. For example, the foul lane was widened to prevent him from being able to stand near the basket for long periods of time.

Another rule inspired by Mikan was the introduction of the shot clock. The shot clock was a 24-second clock and each time had that amount of time to get a shot off or else they would turn the ball over. The NBA was having a hard time attracting fans and a big reason was because of the low scoring. The shot clock would increase the number of shots per game and prevent stalling. Danny Biasone, owner of the Syracuse Nationals, was the first advocate for the shot clock and came up with a formula to get to the 24 seconds that is still used to this day. He noticed that each team took about 60 shots in games that he enjoyed. That meant 120 shots per game. Each game is 48 minutes long – 2,880 seconds. He divided 2,880 by 120 and got to 24.

The shot clock did in fact lead to more scoring and fan support. The league gradually became more of an attraction and started to be recognized as a major professional sports league.

The 1960s were dominated by the Boston Celtics. At one point, they won eight consecutive championships. They were coached by the legendary Red Auerbach and led on the court by center Bill Russell. Russell would go on to win 11 championships in his career – more than any other player.

Despite the fact that the NBA is a relatively new league when compared to the MLB, NFL, and NHL, it has a strong history represented by several notable players and teams. Its players now earn more bigger salaries on average than any of the other professional sports leagues – a far cry from the days when players worked other jobs during their playing career to be able to get by.

Fans were stunned when the Tigers had been viciously tearing up the Llamados’ offenses and foiling their defenses, which lead into an overtime where the Powerade Tigers had complete dominated the Llamados with 8 points in the lead, securing their seat in the final 4 match-up in the semi-finals.

Minutes in the Game

“They said that there was no chance in hell (that we would win this series),” David said. “But look at us now: we’re in heaven.” David finished with 37 points built around eight triples with rookies JV Casio and Marcio Lassiter also delivering crucial baskets when the Tigers needed them most.

Powerade forged the extension at 115 when David drained a three-pointer under heavy pressure with 11.7 seconds left. After a James Yap fumble, the Tigers also muffed a chance to win it in regulation by failing to get a decent inbound in the final 4.3.

B-Meg was comfortably ahead, 94-80, with 7:55 left in the fourth before Powerade hit its stride behind David and the slightly injured Casio.

The Tigers clawed their way back from a couple of 17-point first-half deficits even without their two prime point guards in Celino Cruz and Casio, whom they lost in a 14-second span near the halfway mark of the third period.

Casio, who was trying to pick a foul from Josh Urbiztondo while trying to take a three-point shot, stepped on the foot of the B-Meg guard and twisted his right ankle in the process with 7:26 left and the Llamados enjoying a 71-57 lead.

Cruz replaced Casio and, probably thinking that Urbiztondo intentionally left his foot on Casio’s landing area, planted an elbow on the chest of Urbiztondo on the other end and almost started a melee.
